52% of Spain’s Road Network shows serious deterioration.

The Spanish Road Association (AEC in Spanish) presented its latest report on the condition of Spain’s road infrastructure at a press conference on July 3rd. The report shows a negative trend in the condition of roads, with a €13.4 billion maintenance deficit on the main network, and a diagnosis that 32% of the network requires urgent reconstruction. This study does not include the provincial or local networks, which are generally in poor condition.

The AEC has been conducting these studies since 1985, but after forty years of auditing road maintenance using a visual inspection procedure, the AEC has for the first time conducted a digital assessment using ASIMOB’s Autonomous Road Inspector, which has allowed deterioration to be detected with very high resolution in a sample of 4,000 km distributed throughout Spain. These 4,000 km represent an area 10 times larger than that analyzed using traditional methods.

All the data from the AEC study (in Spanish) can be found at this link.
